THE FUTURE OF THE SUPREME COURT—AND OUR COUNTRY—HANGS IN THE BALANCE

The National Campaign to Restore Civil Rights is committed to educating people about the current erosion of our civil rights and freedoms. Who sits on the Supreme Court, the highest court in our country, dramatically affects the future for all Americans. We believe that the job of the Senate Judiciary Committee and each of our Senators—from both parties—is to work hard for their constituents, and be thoughtful and deliberate in their questioning. We really should be able to know where a judge stands on protecting our most fundamental rights and freedoms, including civil rights. Each nominee needs to be forthcoming about where he or she really stands on the important issues that regularly come before the Supreme Court.

JUDGE SAMUEL ALITO
The stakes couldn't be higher for the Supreme Court vacancy created by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's departure. She was a crucial swing vote in many key cases. Had many decisions gone the other way, we might have a very different country today.

Judge Samuel Alito has a long record of hostility toward established guarantees of fairness, opportunity and privacy for all Americans, including women, senior citizens, people of color, and people with disabilities.

Many important cases will come before the Court in the years to come and we need it to be fair and impartial in its rulings. We believe that personal politics have no place on the Supreme Court and that we need judges committed to protecting crucial individual rights and freedoms, including privacy, women's rights, disability rights, and civil rights.

JUDGE JOHN G. ROBERTS JR.
Now that Judge John G. Roberts Jr. has been confirmed as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court the stakes couldn't be higher. As Chief Justice, Roberts has the ability and power to advance his own perspective on the law and influence the direction of the country. Plus, since his is a lifetime appointment, Judge Roberts will influence the law for decades to come, spanning many administrations. People
in the disability rights community think his record is problematic and dangerous. The People for the American Way have compiled their opinions on Roberts' record and where he stands on major issues. We've also compiled some information about Judge Roberts.
