Christopher ScottWe are proud to feature volunteers from our local offices. This month, Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma recognizes University of Oklahoma College of Law student Christopher Scott.

Chris Scott, a second year J.D. Candidate, generously gave his time and talent to the underserved as a summer intern in the Tulsa Law Office.   The internship position allows law students to gain relevant work experience while also giving back to their community.

Chris’s desire to intern with Legal Aid Services was fueled by his passion for non-profit work.   He says it offers many opportunities to make an impact.

A native Tulsan, Chris is a graduate of Cascia Hall High School.  He practiced with Tulsa attorneys in the area of Non-Family Law involving public benefits and housing issues, which included staffing the FED docket and helping to represent clients in landlord/tenant and foreclosure matters.

“The foreclosure cases strongly stood out because the stakes were so high,” says Chris, “client’s homes hung in the balance.”

“I worked with a client who was raising her granddaughter, after her mother's tragic death; and caring for her mentally-challenged son who required constant attention.  We succeeded in obtaining a modification and her thanks was enough to make the summer worth it.”

Assisting with mortgage foreclosures prompted Chris’s interest in Real Estate Law but he also expressed interest in specialized areas such as Employee Benefits and Indian Law.

His effort to go the extra mile did not go unnoticed by Volunteer Coordinator Jeanie Wheeler.  “Chris took another volunteer, also an OU student, under his wing encouraging her to stay in school.  Upon returning to OU for the fall semester, he followed up with her and found a tutor to help her in her studies.”

We commend Chris as an outstanding example of professionalism in his contribution to Legal Aid Services as he moves forward with unwavering commitment on his journey.
