Introduction to Representing Children in Immigration Matters

Topics:
  • Immigration

Background and Training Information
Mentors from Kids In Need of Defense (KIND) will provide an overview of the child migrant crisis and explain how pro bono attorneys can represent unaccompanied child clients in their immigration proceedings and secure them legal status in the United States through Asylum and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status.  The training covers the basics of practicing before USCIS, Immigration Court and New York State Family Court, and reviews the comprehensive mentorship KIND offers pro bono attorneys.  By the end of the training, attorneys who take on a case will be able to confidently identify the legal relief to which their client is entitled, and will feel comfortable setting up an initial meeting and working with a child client.
