The Civil Legal Advice and Resource Office ("CLARO") is a limited, legal advice project for unrepresented debtor-defendants. CLARO is an innovative and collaborative effort, staffed and run by bar associations, legal services providers, and local law schools and colleges.

Volunteer lawyers are needed to assist the ever-growing numbers of pro se litigants who have a pressing need for legal services on a host of consumer law issues, particularly consumer debt. These cases can be overwhelming for unrepresented litigants; for example, many litigants learn of a lawsuit after their wages have already been garnished or their bank accounts frozen. The attorneys in the CLARO Programs help visitors by explaining the court process, reviewing their case files, preparing court papers and giving advice that will help to resolve their consumer debt issues.

Your Commitment:

Participate in the CLARO Training and volunteer for six total hours in one of the CLARO programs by December 31, 2014.

Volunteers may serve one of the following consumer debt pro se assistance programs:

  • Bronx CLARO
  • Brooklyn CLARO
  • Manhattan CLARO (must be a NYCLA member or Fordham Law School alumnus/a)
  • Queens CLARO
  • Staten Island CLARO
  • Westchester CLARO

CLARO volunteers are not required to perform legal assistance of any kind outside of the CLARO clinic session.

Register with Fordham Law School and more information is available on the CLARO website.
