Supervising Attorney, Safety Net Project - Urban Justice Center

The Safety Net Project (SNP) at the Urban Justice Center seeks applicants for the position of Supervising Attorney. The Supervising Attorney will supervise three Staff Attorneys under the Direction of SNP’s Director of Litigation. SNP’s housing law practice provides direct legal representation to tenants in the area of landlord-tenant law, including civil proceedings in NYC Housing Court, affirmative litigation and New York City Housing Authority Administrative (NYCHA) hearings and appeals.

In addition to supervising several staff attorneys, the Supervising Attorney will manage a small caseload; provide staff attorneys with proper legal training and professional development support; and assist SNP’s staff attorneys on concrete legal tasks. The Supervising Attorney will join SNP’s management team to collaboratively identify, manage and advance new campaign and litigation ideas and opportunities.

Primary Responsibilities

Manage, in collaboration with SNP’s Director of Litigation, several staff attorneys and a paralegal;
Manage a small caseload;
Build and strengthen SNP program policies, procedures, and protocols;
Represent SNP at stakeholder meetings, legislative hearings, and policy and lobbying visits, as assigned;
Overseeing occasional Article 78s in State Supreme Court, as well as appeals to the Appellate Term;
Support SNP’s staff attorneys with court appearances, evaluation of legal issues, and related legal research and legal writing;
Conduct housing intakes and assess clients’ legal needs at SNP’s various legal clinics, including its Right to Counsel days at Bronx Housing Court;
Provide training to select SNP staff and community partners on topics related to landlord-tenant law.
Qualifications

Admitted to the New York State Bar;
3 years of litigation experience in landlord-tenant law;
Excellent research, analytical, written, and oral communication skills;
Familiarity with New York City Housing Authority administrative hearings;
Experience working with diverse populations;
A desire to supervise, train, and mentor housing staff attorneys;
Strong conflict management skills;
Sound strategic judgment and the drive to originate and effectuate new campaigns;
A demonstrated passion for social justice and commitment to working with low-income communities and communities of color to advance equality;
Spanish and/or French language skills strongly preferred.
