Guardianship and Special Education Advocacy
- Guardian Ad Litem
This training will explain the distinctions between Article 17A and Article 81 Guardianship and the procedure for applying for a 17A guardianship. Specifically, the training will cover doctors' affidavits needed; the petition and designations; and letters of guardianship. In addition, the trainer will discuss the roles of the Guardian Ad Litem, Mental Hygiene Legal Service and the Court; as well as, alternatives to guardianship. This program will also provide an overview of special education advocacy in New York. The overview will include a discussion of: the special education statutes including Section 504; independent evaluations, child find, the IEP process, due process hearings and attorney's fees.
