Keynote Speaker: Thomas B. Wilner - Shearman & Sterling, LLP
On June 12, 2008, the United States Supreme Court issued a historic decision affirming the rights of non-citizens held at Guantanamo to pursue habeas challenges to their detention in the federal district courts. This case briefing will present the history and legal landscape behind the decision, its jurisprudential implications and an assessment of what is yet to come in the adjudication of the over 200 habeas cases currently filed in the federal courts.

Thomas B. Wilner serves as counsel of record for Boumediene appellants, and has represented Guantanamo detainees since 2002, including before the Supreme Court in its earlier Rasul v. Bush proceedings. Joining Mr. Wilner on a panel discussing the role of pro bono counsel and opportunities for associates will be:
Gitanjali Gutierrez, Center for Constitutional Rights and member of the Boumediene legal team
Jennifer Kim, City Bar Justice Center Refugee Assistance Project
Jennifer Ching, New York Appleseed
