On Friday, September 21, 2018, the Law Library of Louisiana will sponsor a free CLE presented by Warren M. Billings, entitled “An American Original:  John Bouvier and His Law Dictionary.”  Professor Billings will discuss the significance of the law dictionary which was issued in 1839 and was the first to be grounded wholly in American usages, and it remained in use until early in the twentieth century. He will talk about who John Bouvier was, how he came to do the dictionary, and the content of the dictionary itself.
Professor Warren M. Billings was appointed by the Louisiana Supreme Court Justices to serve as Bicentennial Historian of the Louisiana Supreme Court. He has published numerous books and essays on Louisiana law, the Louisiana Supreme Court, and the Louisiana court system. He is a Distinguished Professor of History, Emeritus, University of New Orleans, where he was a member and later Chairman of the History Department faculty from 1968 to 2005. He is currently Visiting Professor of Law, College of William and Mary Law School. Professor Billings’s most recent work is entitled Magistrates and Pioneers: Essays in the History of American Law.
