“Judges’ Lives: Writing Judicial Biography”

On Tuesday, September 24, 2019, the Law Library of Louisiana and the Supreme Court of Louisiana Historical Society will co- sponsor a free CLE presented by Warren M. Billings, entitled “Judges’ Lives: Writing Judicial Biography.” Professor Billings will discuss the science and the art of writing a judicial biography. He will discuss biographies in general, the judicial biography as a species of the genre – biography, legal background, education, times, and legal analysis. He will provide notable examples of judicial biography and discuss the challenges of writing a work that is part biography and part legal analysis. He will also discuss notable Louisiana judicial biographies, and Louisiana judicial biographies that need/should be written.

Speaker
Professor Warren M. Billings was appointed by the Louisiana Supreme Court Justices to serve as Bicentennial Historian of the Louisiana Supreme Court. He has published numerous books and essays on Louisiana law, the Louisiana Supreme Court, and the Louisiana court system. He is a Distinguished Professor of History, Emeritus, University of New Orleans, where he was a member and later Chairman of the History Department faculty from 1968 to 2005. He is currently Visiting Professor of Law, College of William and Mary Law School. Professor Billings’s most recent work is entitled Magistrates and Pioneers: Essays in the History of American Law.
