The Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless is holding a training for anyone interested in volunteering to provide "know your rights" outreach to singles and families during hypothermia season.

The Hypothermia Outreach Project relies on volunteers to reach out to families and singles who have no safe place to sleep at night who are seeking emergency shelter. By circulating flyers and speaking one-on-one with families at the Virginia Williams Family Resource Center (33 N Street, NE) and with singles at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library (901 G Street, NW), volunteers advise individuals of the right to shelter and other important rights during hypothermic or severe weather conditions. Additionally, volunteers connect to the Legal Clinic families and singles who believe they have been unlawfully denied shelter or who have suffered from other legal violations so that an attorney can try to assist them.

Outreach opportunities for families are available two times every weekday: 8:00 - 9:30 AM and 3:00 - 4:30 PM. Singles outreach takes place from 5:30 - 7:00 PM. Because volunteers are providing outreach and not legal advice, both attorneys and non-attorneys are welcome to participate.

In the winter, shelter can be a matter of life or death for those experiencing homelessness in the District. As a volunteer who is on the ground talking to people in crisis, you play an important role in ensuring that families and individuals receive the services that the law guarantees to them.
