Pro Bono Pitch
October is when the Major League Baseball World Series kicks off, and maybe a chance for L.A.'s Dodgers to return to glory. But it's also time for National Pro Bono Week. In celebration of National Pro Bono Week, Public Counsel of Los Angeles is launching its first Pro Bono Pitch Campaign to encourage attorneys to take on a pro bono matter before the end of the year.
From now through December 15, if an attorney signs up for a clinic or takes a case, Public Counsel will add his/her name to their Home Run Roster (to be displayed on a "Wall of Fame" in Public Counsel's offices). Those volunteers will also be entered in a raffle to win 2014 Dodgers tickets!
This campaign is a chance to highlight pro bono attorneys, their firms or companies, and build energy around Pro Bono Week. The campaign will be blogged about on Public Counsel's Go Public site, both during and after the Pro Bono Pitch sign on period, with posts about all of the great things many of these "heart-of-the-batting-order" hitters are doing for Public Counsel and their clients.
Shop and Support Justice in Alabama
On Saturday, October 26, the Alabama State Bar Pro Bono Task Force, in cooperation with all of the Books-A-Million stores in the state, will be conducting a fundraiser in support of Volunteer Lawyer Programs.
Volunteers will be stationed at each of Alabama's 26 Books-a-million locations handing out cards with promotional codes to customers (Bookfair ID# 7000000936). Ten percent of every purchase made will go to support the work of the Madison County, South Alabama, Birmingham, Montgomery and state bar Volunteer Lawyer Programs (VLP). These programs provide free legal assistance to low income Alabamians with civil legal problems.
This is the Alabama State Bar's first year doing a statewide fundraiser. Because of the Bar's partnership with a national book chain, this is a fundraiser that's both great for the community and easily replicable in other states.
