Domestic violence has been and remains a deadly ill plaguing our state. According to the N.C. Department of Justice, 679 North Carolinians died as a result of domestic violence between 2008 and 2013, and thousands more were abused, injured and intimidated.

The North Carolina State Bar, Legal Aid of North Carolina, the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Womble Carlyle have teamed up to address this issue. On October 23rd, Womble Carlyle's Winston-Salem office will host an N.C. State Bar CLE event (CLE approval pending) on "Representing a Domestic Violence Victim in a 50B/Domestic Violence Protective Order Hearing." The CLE will take place from 1-4:30 p.m., and will be broadcast to the firm's offices in Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh and Research Triangle Park.

These protective orders often are the first line of defense in shielding a domestic violence victim.

The CLE event is free, with the agreement that participants provide pro bono assistance to at least one domestic violence victim in the next calendar year. The presenters for this event will be:

Valene Franco, Family Law Managing Attorney for the Winston-Salem office of Legal Aid of North Carolina; and

Amily McCool, Systems Advocacy Director for the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Hope to see you on October 23rd.
