Massachusetts keeps criminal offender record information, known as "CORI," on every individual who enters the state's criminal court system. CORI is recorded and kept on file even if the underlying case is ultimately dismissed or the accused is found not guilty. CORI is used in screening processes by employers, landlords, and government agencies. The increased use of CORI by employers and others has resulted in more and more people with criminal records being denied employment, housing, benefits, and other opportunities for economic stability that others take for granted. On Thursday October 28, 2010 from 5:30pm-8:00pm at Greater Boston Legal Services (197 Friend Street, Boston, MA), volunteers will meet with clients to answer CORI questions and provide information on how to get a copy of a CORI and how to seal a CORI. Volunteers will be supervised by attorneys from Greater Boston Legal Services and the Legal Advocacy and Resource Center, and will attend a one-hour training prior to the clinic. The trainings will take place on Wednesday October 27, 2010 from 5:00pm-6:00pm at Suffolk Law or on Thursday October 28, 2010 from 4:30pm-5:30pm at GBLS, just prior to the clinic. This is a great opportunity for 1Ls, as well as all other students. Faculty and administrators are also encouraged to participate! Space is limited, so please RSVP as soon as possible by emailing (rappaportcenter@suffolk.edu) or calling (617-573-8644) the Rappaport Center, and please indicate which training you will attend.
