The Appeals Bureau conducts a pro bono program that utilizes experienced volunteer attorneys to do criminal appellate brief writing and oral argument. The entire brief writing process usually takes two or three months and an Assistant District Attorney edits the appellate brief. Oral argument opportunities cannot be guaranteed because a case is argued only if defense counsel decides to argue. However, if there is an oral argument on the case to which volunteer is assigned, the volunteer will do that oral argument, preceded by a moot court to prepare for oral argument. All first time volunteers are sworn in as a Special Assistant District Attorney. Volunteers are assigned to a liaison Assistant District Attorney who provides advice and editing. Liaisons guide the volunteer attorney through the entire appeal process and provide additional contact by telephone or email. Two face-to-face meetings are held with the liaison.
