Spring 2005 Medicare Conference Call Series

Making the MMA Work for Low-Income Beneficiaries:
What States Need to Know

Families USA is pleased to announce a new series of conference calls for state advocates and policymakers. These conference calls will focus on implementation of the Medicare Modernization Act (MMA), especially as it affects low-income Medicare beneficiaries. The calls will cover a range of topics, including the transition of dual eligibles, administration of the low-income subsidy, the creation of wraparound programs, and other issues.

We'd like to thank all of you who joined us on our first
Medicare Modernization Act conference call on March 21, "The Low-Income Medicare Drug Benefit for Beginners." We had over 300 participants! For those who weren't able to join us, the call is available for replay on the Families USA Web site.

In response to feedback we received about that call, we are
changing the schedule of calls we sent out earlier. Instead of bi-weekly calls, we will be hosting calls approximately once a month. The next call is:

Monday April 18, 2:30 PM Eastern Time: "Filling the Gaps in Part D: What Can States Do??" This call will discuss how states can increase enrollment in the low-income subsidy and how they can build wraparound programs to fill in some of the gaps in the Part D benefit. We will include an assessment of what's possible under the final regulations issued by CMS.

Please RSVP for this call by clicking here:

We will send out call information, including the phone number, on Wednesday, April 13.

Future calls will be as follows:

a. Monday, May 23, 2:30 PM Eastern Time: "Dual Eligibles: Ensuring Their Access to Care in 2006 and Beyond"

b.Monday, June 20, 2:30 PM Eastern Time: "Long-Term Care and the MMA"

c. July/August: Summer break -- no calls

d.. Monday, September 19, 2:30 PM Eastern Time: "Low-Income Subsidy Enrollment: Where Do We Stand??

e. Please note that there will be NO call on May 2.

We will send out reminder and RSVP information for each of the calls approximately one week before the date of the call. For more information on the Medicare Modernization Act, please visit Medicare Central.

PLEASE NOTE: These calls are primarily focused on state policyissues raised by the MMA. If you are a Medicare beneficiary and have questions about changes in your benefits, we encourage you to contact your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). A directory of SHIPs is available on the Health Assistance Partnership Web site.
