A grant from LSC's Technology Initiative Grant Program to LSC-funded Legal Aid Society of Orange County will increase access to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for low-income people across the nation. The EITC provides low and moderate income working people with tax refunds. For parents with children, the EITC can provide a refund of up to $4,500, which is often a significant percentage of a family's annual earnings.

The grant has assisted Legal Aid in developing "I-CAN! E-File," a free online system that allows low-income people to file federal taxes and apply for the EITC on-line.

The website, www.icanefile.org, has already helped almost 3,000 people file their tax returns this year, putting over $2.5 million back in the pockets of low-income people. The website allows residents in any state to file their federal tax return and residents of certain states to file their state tax forms. The website is available in both English and Spanish.
