ABA Section of Business Law 2006 National Public Service Award Winners

The ABA Section of Business Law is pleased to announce the winners of its 2006 National Public Service Award. The individual award was presented to David R. Punzak of the Carlton Fields law firm; the law firm award was presented to Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. The awards were presented at the ABA Section of Business Law Spring Meeting recently held in Tampa, Florida.
David R. Punzak is a partner in the St. Petersburg office of the Carlton Fields law firm. David was nominated by the staff and the Board of Directors of the Florida Community Loan Fund ("FCLF"). David has donated several hundred hours of time to FCLF, and has made himself available to FCLF without hesitation for over eight years. David assists FCLF with all manner of real estate and lending legal matters. Beneficiaries of David's pro bono services to FCLF include homes for teenagers in foster care, Florida's first charter school for the children of migrant farm workers, and mixed- use projects that have helped revitalize distressed neighborhoods. David also provides pro bono legal services to at least two other Tampa-area nonprofit organizations. In addition, David has served
on the boards of eight different nonprofit organizations in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area during his legal career.
Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP ("Skadden") was nominated for the National Public Service award by the Lawyers Alliance for New York, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, and The Legal Aid Society (of New York). Skadden has been committed to providing business law and transactional legal assistance to nonprofit organizations for years. Hundreds of Skadden lawyers and staff have participated in its pro bono efforts, contributing in excess of 100,000 hours of work during 2005 alone. In recent years, Skadden has assisted over 180 nonprofit organizations, including those promoting affordable housing and neighborhood economic development. Skadden lawyers have provided advice and services on topics including tax, corporate, real estate, and labor and employment law. Skadden's pro bono activities extend far beyond New York and into several other major metropolitan areas.
