Webinar/Teleseminar, United States
This four-week training will focus on cutting edge or developing topics in self-petitioning under the Violence Against Women Act for survivors of domestic violence and U nonimmigrant Status for victims of certain crimes. Advocates who have previous training or experience with VAWA or U status cases will have an opportunity to learn about new legal developments, consider strategic issues for applicants and family members, and strengthen their ability to prepare successful applications for VAWA and U status and subsequent adjustment of status.
Topics will include: advanced issues related to derivative beneficiaries; grounds of inadmissibility and waivers; law enforcement certifications, and the annual cap on U status approvals. Throughout the course, the instructors will highlight similarities, differences and strategic considerations in circumstances where the non-citizen may be eligible for both benefits.
The course starts on June 16 with access to the e-learning course website and week one assignment. Once you receive your user name and password, you may participate in a variety of activities for self-directed learning, including reading assignments, exercises, and quizzes. The course will be interactive, with opportunities for online discussion among students, and between the students and the instructors. The course also includes four live webinars conducted on consecutive Thursdays at 3:00 p.m. Eastern starting on Thursday, June 23.
Each webinar is recorded and posted on the course website after the webinar is conducted. Although we encourage participants to attend the live webinars each week, you will be able to listen to and view a recording of any webinar you are unable to attend whenever you choose to do so. A course outline will be available on the CLINIC website by April 15. This course is designed for the practitioner who already has experience with VAWA and U status. Familiarity with (a) immigration law concepts; and (b) eligibility requirements for VAWA and U Status, is assumed.
Course Completion Requirements:
Course participants will receive a course completion certificate if they (a) attend or view recordings of the weekly course webinar and (b) complete the required course activity for the week. You have up to two weeks after the last live webinar in the course to meet these requirements. The instructors for this course are CLINIC attorneys Sarah Bronstein and Susan Schreiber. For questions about the course content, please contact Sarah Bronstein at sbronstein@cliniclegal.org.
