What is /bayarea and How Does It Work?, the San Francisco Bay Area's online gateway to pro bono, is a joint project of The Bar Association of San Francisco's Volunteer Legal Services Program and Pro Bono Net. The mission of the site is three-fold:

  • to use information technology to increase the amount and quality of legal services provided to low-income individuals and communities by pro bono lawyers
  • to faciliate matching pro bono opportunities and cases with interested attorneys in all Bay Area counties
  • to create a virtual community of public interest lawyers that brings together pro bono, legal services and academic sectors of the profession

All visitors to can access the Pro Bono Programs guide, to learn about opportunities; and a calendar of legal and social services trainings. Pro bono attorneys, students or other qualified professionals can easily register on the Web site for free access to a wide range of resources helpful for their pro bono work in four major practice areas of civil law: Homelessness/Immigration, Eviction Defense, Family Justice, and Business Law. The online support and resources in each practice area include:

  • a library of training manuals, briefs and practice materials
  • current news articles and links
  • a message board that allows members of the practice area to communicate with one another

To access all of these resources, just choose your practice area of interest from the left-hand side of this page and click "Join this Area."  If you have any questions, please contact VLSP's administrator at or call them at 415.982.1600.
