Tulsa’s abused and neglected kids need your help!

If you have ever considered doing more in the practice of law than what you’re doing now, started law school thinking you wanted to help an important cause or are just a law student considering getting some time in the courtroom before passing the bar, then Tulsa Lawyers for Children’s Fall Training might be for you.

The Fall Training Program for TLC’s volunteer lawyers will cover four Fridays in October.  Each of the four free classes will be held at the University Of Tulsa College Of Law in Room 203 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.   Every session will cover different material and attendance of all four classes in the series will qualify for 9 CLE credits; this includes 1 hour of ethics.

The Fall Training Schedule is as follows:

Friday, October 1 - Basics of Deprived Cases
Friday, October 8 - Child's Attorney Duties; Role of DHS
Friday, October 15 - ICWA; Procedures; Jury Trials; In Need of Treatment
Friday, October 22 - Communicating with the Child Client

About Tulsa Lawyers for Children:

Tulsa Lawyers for Children, Inc. or TLC recruits, trains and provides ongoing assistance to volunteer attorneys who represent children up to 18 years of age who have been abused, neglected or abandoned and who are subjects of "deprived" cases in the Tulsa County Juvenile Court.  TLC volunteers include not only litigators and family lawyers, but corporate attorneys, former judges, former general counsels of large public companies, patent and trademark attorney, law school professors and many others who bring their experience, talent and dedication into a system largely hidden from public scrutiny by the veil of confidentiality which cloaks juvenile proceedings.

One of the ways TLC provides ongoing assistance is its T.U. Law Student Pro Bono Project and its Shelter Visitation & Show Cause Hearing Project.   TU Law Students attend the same training as attorney volunteers and then act as volunteer legal assistants to volunteer attorneys on their TLC cases.  This is particularly helpful when timely visits with the child clients become difficult for the attorney.   Law Students also interview children coming into the shelter and appear at "show Cause" hearings as guardians ad litem.
