ConocoPhillips grant support Legal Aid office

The Bartlesville Legal Aid office delivers free civil legal assistance to eligible low-income individuals and their families in the northeastern counties of Craig, Delaware, Mayes, Nowata, Ottawa, Osage, Rogers and Washington. Last year, the Bartlesville Law office and its satellite office in Jay closed 1,184 cases, many of them involving family issues of domestic violence, child custody and support, and divorce as well as cases on bankruptcy, housing and entitlements. Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma is a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation established for the purpose of providing free civil legal help to eligible low-income individuals and their families and to the elderly of Oklahoma. Legal Aid attorneys and their staff work through LASO's seventeen law offices, which serve all 77 counties of Oklahoma. In 2006, Legal Aid attorneys closed 19,085 cases, which affected the lives of over 19,000 Oklahoma children Legal Aid makes a priority of those cases involving survival issues such as safety, food, shelter, and a source of income or which have an emergency nature such as a hearing in a few days or an impending eviction. Those clients who are outside these priorities but who meet every other criteria for legal help are either give Pro Se packets that will lead them through the steps and forms they need to represent themselves in court on matters of simple law or referred to a private attorney who takes the case as pro bono. Last year, 399 cases were handled by a member of Legal Aid's pro bono panel and it is a goal of the agency to increase that number significantly.
