September 2017 Volunteer Spotlight- City Bar Justice Center honors Alan B. Kaplan from Barclays

Alan B. Kaplan, is Managing Director & Deputy General Counsel of the Americas at Barclays, a member of the City Bar Fund Board, and a committed pro bono volunteer with the Neighborhood Entrepreneur Law Project. As Managing Director & Deputy General Counsel, Alan covers a broad range of activities and businesses of Barclays in the US, with a focus on investment banking, lending, debt capital markets and prime brokerage. His current responsibilities include bank and broker-dealer regulation, litigation management, principal investments, restructuring, commercial matters and operations. Despite Alan’s significant role at Barclays, he also makes it a point to promote and encourage pro bono involvement among the entire Barclays legal department. And, Alan leads by example, regularly volunteering at community based legal clinics to provide pro bono counsel to low income micro entrepreneurs, through the Neighborhood Entrepreneur Law Project. Alan and the team from Barclay’s travel to Harlem and Brooklyn regularly to volunteer at NELP’s community based legal clinics, where they meet with dozens of struggling entrepreneurs and provide them with legal advice and guidance on issues such as entity formation, drafting and reviewing contracts, understanding and protecting their intellectual property rights. Alan has counseled entrepreneurs wanting to start businesses such as an online tutoring business, a theme travel company and a cleaning company with issues regarding liability and entity formation. The assistance provided was always delivered with a kind smile and a focus on helping the entrepreneurs to get their small businesses
started off on sound footing. Through Alan’s own participation and leadership, Barclays has provided legal assistance to well over 115 low income entrepreneurs, since late 2014, when Alan joined the City Bar fund Board.

We are delighted to recognize Alan’s dedication to assisting low-to moderate-income micro entrepreneurs through the Neighborhood Entrepreneur Law Project of the City Bar Justice Center.
