Inspired to act after the murder of George Floyd in the summer of 2020, recently retired attorney Leah Keith wanted to help in-need New Yorkers with legal representation. Leah was eager to use the knowledge she acquired as a former prosecutor who mostly handled  white collar crimes, to help the staff of  the Juvenile Rights Practice at The Legal Aid Society understand the thinking of “the other side”.

Since May of 2021, Leah has been aiding attorneys with research, which has been of tremendous help to the Juvenile Practice. Having the luxury of time allows for Ms. Keith to take a meticulous look at discovery  materials and help prepare for the clients’ defenses. Natasha Fortune, Assistant Attorney in Charge at and Leah’s supervisor in The Legal Aid Society Bronx office, explained  that “her experience…provides us with a perspective that we otherwise would not have. This has been invaluable while strategizing and preparing defenses.” Leah stated, “it is helpful to get inside your adversary’s head,” especially when looking at relevant evidence.

For her part, Leah has learned a lot about the work of her Legal Aid colleagues.  She has been impressed by their commitment, and how they handle cases with care and empathy. What has been most impressive for Leah is how “everyone is fiercely rowing the boat in the same direction.” especially during a time where it feels like we could not be farther apart.
Leah looks forward to continuing  her volunteer work with Legal Aid and hopes that someday, she will be able to meet her new colleagues in person and not behind a computer screen. Likewise, her colleagues look forward to her contagious enthusiasm in the months ahead.
