Summer 2021 Project Spotlight – Legal Clinic for the Homeless
The City Bar Justice Center’s Legal Clinic for the Homeless (LCH) assists families experiencing homelessness or who are at risk. Although the project primarily advocates for public benefits and appropriate shelter placements for its clients, the project’s advocacy reaches beyond the realms of public assistance. LCH addresses the immediate needs of its clients and engages in legal work that ensures shelter residents have access to necessities and the support and tools necessary to combat poverty.
Most recently, LCH and the New York City Bar Association (City Bar) released an impact report offering an overview of the #Wifi4Homeless campaign, a collaborative movement fueled by a call to secure New Yorkers experiencing homelessness with reliable internet and access to essential technology, a tool that became essential during the pandemic. The report includes a detailed trajectory of how LCH and the City Bar were able to generate policy change at the city and state level, highlighting important milestones reached with the support of City Bar staff, community partners, and pro bono supporters – all of whom share a deep commitment to close New York’s digital divide.
