Winter 2021 Project Spotlight: Legal Clinic for the Homeless
The City Bar Justice Center’s Legal Clinic for the Homeless (LCH) continues its work in supporting and providing critical legal services to families and individuals living in homeless shelters in New York City – a population that has been disproportionately impacted by lack of internet access and food, housing, and economic insecurity with the pandemic further exacerbating these issues.
The findings of LCH’s report documenting the devastating consequences of the stark digital divide on homeless shelter residents, fueled a citywide #Wifi4Homeless advocacy campaign in collaboration with the New York City Bar Association, urging the City to equip homeless shelters with reliable Wi-Fi and internet-ready devices as critical services and resources remain mainly online amid the pandemic. The advocacy campaign has successfully captured the attention of key stakeholders and has been the basis for proposed legislation. LCH is sustaining its efforts to generate policy change to secure essential technology for individuals and families living in homeless shelters.
