Safe Horizon

Safe Horizon's mission is to provide support, prevent violence and promote justice for victims of crime and abuse, their families, and communities. Safe Horizon serves approximately 350,000 New Yorkers each year through nearly 100 programs located throughout New York City, including the City's domestic violence hotline, domestic violence shelters, community offices, and programs in schools, courts and police precincts. Pro bono lawyers assist the organization's corporate lawyers, who handle the organization's legal matters, and its government affairs department, which advances the organization's legislative and public policy agendas. Safe Horizon's Domestic Violence Law Project provides legal services for victims of domestic violence who cannot afford a private attorney. Practic areas include orders of protection, child custody and visitation, divorce, child and spousal support, child protective, criminal law, legislative and policy work, and community education. Mentoring is provided by staff and pro bono attorneys. Volunteers are required to take one case per year. Safe Horizon's Immigration Law Project, located in Jackson Heights, counsels immigrants on obtaining legal status. The Immigration Law Project assists low-income and poor clients with services, including asylum, adjustment of status, Violence Against Women Act petitions, and family petitions.
