The Civil Legal Advice and Resource Office ("CLARO") is a limited, legal advice project for unrepresented debtor-defendants.

CLARO is an innovative and collaborative effort, staffed and run by bar associations, legal services providers, and local law schools and colleges.

Volunteer lawyers are needed to assist the significant numbers of unrepresented litigants who have a pressing need for legal services on a host of consumer law issues, particularly consumer debt.The volunteer attorneys in the CLARO Programs help visitors by explaining the court process, reviewing their case files, preparing court papers and giving advice that will help to resolve their consumer debt issues.

Topics include: Introduction to CLARO; Ethical Considerations; Client Interaction; Pre-Litigation & The Life of a Debt; The Court Process & Key Motions; Substantive Defenses; Negotiating a Settlement; Stipulations; Preparing the Pro Se Consumer Debt Defendant for Trial.

 

  • CLE Credit Comments: 1.5 PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE, 1.5 SKILLS Appropriate for both newly admitted & experienced attorneys Commitment: To receive 3 CLE credits you must volunteer for six total hours with CLARO by December 31, 2017. Volunteers may serve with one of the following consumer debt pro se assistance programs, all of which provide limited legal advice to unrepresented consumers: Bronx CLARO; Brooklyn CLARO; Manhattan CLARO (must be a NYCLA member or Fordham Law School alumnus/a); Queens CLARO; Staten Island CLARO; and/or Westchester CLARO.
