Providing effective representation to veterans, whether in civil or criminal matters, presents a unique set of concerns for attorneys, particularly those who have not served themselves. Most critical is an understanding of familiarity substantive and cultural fundamentals, particularly when representation involves navigating the complex web of benefits intended to help low-income and justice-involved veterans. This session provides an analytic framework to understand who is a "veteran" under the law, what rights and benefits attach to that status, key issue identification, and cultural practices for attorneys serving veterans in a system where good will has not always yielded good outcomes.
