The Legal Aid Society Partners With Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale & Dorr LLP to Protect the Right to Lawful Emergency Shelter for Homeless Women and Men
In 1981, the landmark litigation, Callahan v. Carey, was settled with a consent decree that requires New York City to provide emergency shelter to each man who is in need of shelter by reason of physical, mental or social dysfunction or who meets the need standard for public assistance. Two years later, the case of Eldredge v Koch extended this right to shelter to homeless women. The consent decree also establishes minimum standards for conditions and services in adult shelters. Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP Attorney and the City Bar Justice Center Win Long-overdue Disability Benefits for Vietnam Veteran
Charles Manice of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP successfully secured over $100,000 worth of long-overdue disability benefits for a Vietnam veteran through participation in the City Bar Justice Center’s Veterans Assistance Project. Learn more

In Feburary, the New York public interest community lost a champion. Michael Rothenberg, Executive Director of New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, fought to make the world a better palce and he will be sorely missed.

Upcoming Trainings and Events

Wednesday, April 4, 2012: Basic CLARO Training
The Civil Legal Advice and Resource Office (CLARO) Program provides limited legal advice to low-income New Yorkers on consumer debt collection issues. The CLARO Programs operate under the auspices of the New York State Access to Justice Program and involve partnerships among bar associations, legal services offices, and academic institutions. CLARO Programs hold weekly court-based clinics at which volunteer attorneys assist unrepresented litigants on a limited basis under the supervision of consumer law experts. Learn more

Tuesday, April 24, 2012: New York State Foreclosure Laws, Defenses and Settlement Options
The Legal Aid Society presents this training about the foreclosure process and the laws that govern it, including the law mandating settlement conferences for all residential foreclosures. The session will review statutory as well as common law defenses and counterclaims, including lack of standing. We will further consider the various loss mitigation options, including the "Home Affordable Modification Program" (HAMP). Learn more
