  • Advocates for Children

It is with immense sadness that we inform you of the death of our Executive Director Jill Chaifetz, who died of ovarian cancer on February 2, 2006. In addition to her eight years of service to Advocates for Children, Jill was also an adjunct professor at Fordham University School of Law and she served on the board of several not-for-profit organizations. She is the author of numerous and important policy reports, articles, and self-help publications. Prior to taking the helm at AFC, Jill created and directed the Legal Services Project at The Door - a Center for Alternatives. Although Jill had been ill for a while, her passing was sudden and unexpected.

Jill was one of those magical people, who inspired and was loved by everyone she knew. She was a tireless champion of the rights of children and was singularly committed to social and racial justice and equality. Her professional achievements, brilliance, warmth, giving nature, spirit and ability to love will help her to live on in all of us. As a colleague recently noted, Jill's life is a shining example of what one individual can accomplish.

This sad occasion marks the loss of a devoted wife and mother and a beloved friend and a leader in the public interest field. Our sympathy and thoughts go out to her husband, Daniel Seltzer; children Leila, Isaac and Milo Selchaif; parents Marilyn and Malcolm Chaifetz; in-laws Joyce and Isadore Seltzer; brother Lawrence Chaifetz and his wife Renee; sister-in-law Eva Seltzer and Frans Westra; and aunt Judith Chaifetz.

There will be a memorial service, details of which will be provided shortly. As per Jill's family's wishes, memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Jill Chaifetz Education Fund, which will support AFC programs and clients, or to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, (
