Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, LLP, was recently recognized by the New York State Bar Association for its 150 year history of performing work pro bono publico. Milbank was nominated for this honor by the Legal Aid Society, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, and Lawyers Alliance for New York. In 2007, lawyers in Milbanks' domestic offices performed 37,000 hours of pro bono work, on nearly 500 different matters. Of the 37,000 hours, 27, 290 of them were in the New York office alone. This is an average of 87 hours per lawyer and achieved a remarkable 90% participation in the New York office.

Milbank's partnership the Legal Aid Society dates back to the early 1980's when Alexander D. Forger, then the firm's Chair, was the Society's Board Chairman. Today, the firm's current Chairman, Mel Immergut, serves as Vice-Chair on Legal Aid's Board. Examples of Milbank's outstanding work with the Legal Aid Society include:

• First Year Associate Externship program, in which new attorneys spend their first three months at the firm working in Juvenile Rights, Immigration, and Community Development practices;
• Co-counsel to renovate the landmark former Corn Exchange Bank Building in Harlem and establish it as the home of a new Harlem Culinary Institute; this will enable low-income individuals to pursue a career in the NYC's restaurant and food service industries;

• Under the leadership of Bruce Kayle, chair of the Milbank's Tax Practice, representation of a large number of low-income taxpayers seeking earned income tax credit and appearing in tax court to vigorously defend Legal Aid clients in a variety of tax disputes.
