The Practising Law Institute is offering a webcast of a live presentation from New York entitled Addressing Domestic Violence Across Practice Areas 2020 on February 7, 2020 from 1:30 PM-5:00 PM.

Full scholarships and discounts to attend PLI programs are widely available to attorneys working in nonprofit/legal services organizations; pro bono attorneys; government attorneys; judges and judicial law clerks; law professors and law students; senior attorneys (age 65 and over); law librarians and paralegals who work for nonprofit/legal services organizations; unemployed attorneys; and others with financial hardships.

All eligible attendees are urged to complete and submit a PLI Scholarship Application.

Why You Should Attend

This program will explore the legal and practical challenges of representing victims of domestic violence. Experienced practitioners in the law and in social or counseling services will share their practical strategies for addressing common challenges across disciplines.  The practical insights that will be shared will be useful to legal practitioners and service providers in a variety of practice areas. While the program will highlight New York law and practice, the legal doctrines and strategies explored by the presenters will have relevance for practitioners in other jurisdictions.

  • Trauma-informed lawyering including interviewing the client and confidentiality and safety issues
  • Considerations when using experts in domestic violence cases
  • Gathering and using evidence in domestic violence cases and responding to evidentiary challenges
Who Should Attend

This program is designed for attorneys and social workers in private, pro bono, or public interest practice who are interested in assisting domestic violence survivors. The program will benefit both new and experienced practitioners, and will enhance their ability to address domestic violence issues.
