Using the New York City Human Rights Law in your Practice

Topics:
  • Civil Rights

The New York City Human Rights Law (NYCHRL) is one of the most robust and expansive anti-discrimination laws in the nation. It was explicitly passed and amended for the express purpose of providing broader anti-discrimination protections than exist under state and federal law. The NYCHRL protects against discrimination on the basis of national origin, race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, marital status, and other categories. However, for a variety of reasons, the law has been under-utilized. We will discuss how to use this law to protect the civil rights of your clients (across disciplines) and will discuss how some recent lawsuits have been successful in achieving justice for a broad range of clients.
