Mineola - Cheryl Helfer of Dix Hills is a successful matrimonial attorney who never hesitates when there is an opportunity to give back to the community. Last summer a young woman came to Helfer's Bellmore law office seeking a divorce. After a brief conversation, she recognized that this woman was a victim of domestic abuse and needed the services of the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence. She provided the woman with the 24/7 Coalition hotline number (516-542-0404), described the services offered and encouraged her to call. Helfer then called the Coalition's Pro Bono Project, explained the situation and offered to represent the young woman on a pro bono, or no fee, basis. The woman did call the hotline and is now being represented by one of the best matrimonial attorneys in New York.
For her generosity and kindness in pro bono representation of this client and many other domestic abuse clients, and for the countless hours she spends each year on other pro bono matters, Nassau County Bar Association President Peter J. Mancuso has named her the Pro Bono Attorney for July/August 2013.
Cheryl Helfer is a partner of Helfer & Helfer LLP in Bellmore, serving clients throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. Her practice focuses on matrimonial law and divorce-related issues, including child custody, support, property division and claims of neglect and domestic abuse. Helfer received her Juris Doctor from St. John's University School of Law in 1980 and has received additional legal training in the areas of mediation and collaborative law since then.
Throughout her career, Helfer has been a highly involved member of the legal community, with current affiliations that include the Nassau County Bar Association, Nassau County Matrimonial Mediation Panel, Nassau County Women's Bar Association (past president), New York State Bar Association, New York Association of Collaborative Professionals and the International Association of Collaborative Professionals. She has also been recognized as a New York Super Lawyer for 2011, 2012 and 2013 and is proud to be an elected fellow of the New York Bar Foundation. In addition to her many legal talents, Helfer is also proficient in French and Mandarin Chinese.
