Outstanding Volunteers

The City Bar Justice Center is Proud to Honor JPMorgan Chase and Paul, Weiss at Annual Gala
On April 14th, under columns turned palm trees, over 500 attendees celebrated the work of the Justice Center and the commitment to pro bono exemplified by JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP. Each year the Center honors outstanding law firm and corporation partners for the work they do to increase access to justice for low-income New Yorkers. Learn more

Supreme Court Overturns Exclusive Concession Agreement for Randall's Island
Last year, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, along with parent/student advocates, park advocates, environmental justice advocates, local residents, Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, LLP, and civil rights attorney Normal Siegel sued the City for violating land-use and environmental laws relating to the large-scale development of athletic fields on Randall's Island, a public parkland. Mayor Bloomberg Announces New NYC Service Initiative To Provide Free Legal Services To Homeowners In Danger Of Foreclosure
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg launched a new NYC Service initiative to provide free legal support for New Yorkers at risk of losing their homes to foreclosure. The program will increase the availability and effectiveness of free legal representation for those facing foreclosure by training and dispatching 300 volunteer attorneys to expand legal services provided by non-profit organizations. Domestic Violence Victim Seeks Assistance with Wills Preparation
Legal Services NYC - Staten Island seeks a pro bono attorney to draft a will for a 30 year old woman who is about to undergo surgery for stomach cancer and seeks to protect her son from her abusive husband.  Legal Services is currently litigating a family offense proceeding on her behalf.  Learn more

Monday April 26: Brooklyn Volunteer Lawyers Project 2010 Pro Bono Fair
Meet VLP staff, mentors, volunteers, and members of the judiciary at a special event highlighting the VLP's many pro bono opportunities. Learn how you can give back to the Brooklyn community and gain valuable skills through the VLP's unique projects. Learn more

Wednesday April 28: Consumer Debt Collection for DV Practitioners
This training will provide an overview of consumer debt collection practices for domestic violence advocates. It is also geared towards practitioners interested in participating in DV-CLARO, a pilot project which will team up consumer law experts and domestic violence legal services providers. Learn more

Thursday May 6: How Senior Attorneys Develop a Pro Bono Practice
The Legal Aid Society will discuss how lawyers transitioning from full-time practice or recently retired from law firms and corporations can engage in challenging pro bono legal work. A panel of former law firm partners will discuss how they have transitioned into an active pro bono practice at Legal Aid, using their legal talent and expertise on behalf of low-income New Yorkers. Thursday May 6: Temporary Protective Status for Haitian Immigrants
The Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs is pleased to be partnering with several non-profit organizations, including the New York Immigration Coalition, Haitian Americans United for Progress (HAUP) and CAMBA, to offer free legal assistance to Haitian immigrants who may be eligible for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). New Library Resources

Legal Aid Society Training on Social Security Disability
Learn how to represent disabled children and adults at administrative hearings before the Social Security Administration. The session covers Social Security law and practice including how to gather and analyze medical evidence, the examination of parties and witnesses, drafting effective pre-hearing memoranda, and oral argument. NYLPI Training on Nonprofit Board Service for New Associates
Hosted by New York Lawyers for the Public Interest at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP in March, this training provides valuable insights into how board service can help you fulfill your commitment to public interest and enhance your legal career. Watch the training here.

Legal Aid Society Training on Habeas Corpus Petitions
Learn how to file and litigate habeas corpus petitions in Federal District Court on behalf of detained non-citizens facing removal from the United States. Topics will include mandatory detention, prolonged detention, and indefinite detention. View the training videos and download supporting materials here.

Did you know?

Did you know that May 1 is Law Day?  Started by the American Bar Association in 1958, Law Day is an annual event to reflect on the role of the law in our society.  In celebration, on May 6th the City Bar is holding a public forum on landlord-tenant disputes.  The New York State Bar Association also has a listing of events around the state.  Happy Law Day 2010!
