A 2006 settlement of a lawsuit arranged for thousands to receive food stamp benefits. The suit alleged that people transferred to the federal Social Security program should not have been cut off from the benefits. It was only in October 2008 that credits began to be made to recipients' accounts. The credits are often in large disbursements of several hundred dollars or more. More than 1 million New York City residents receive food stamp benefits. The total number of recipients has increased by over 65 per cent since 2002.
