During its annual Pro Bono Award and Law Firm Recognition Ceremony on November 6, The Legal Aid Society honored Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP for its extraordinary pro bono commitment to The Legal Aid Society and its clients. Vilia Hayes, (second from left), a partner and former Legal Aid director, and Charles H. Scherer (holding award), Managing Partner of Hughes Hubbard and a current Legal Aid director, accept the Pro Bono Publico and Public Service Law Firm Award from Theodore A. Levine, Society President; Patricia M. Hynes, Immediate Past Chairperson; and Steven Banks, Attorney-in-Chief.

The firm has expanded its commitment to serve as invaluable co-counsel in a major law reform case on behalf of battered immigrant women and children. Associates and paralegals from Hughes Hubbard also staff a weekly immigration hotline and provide assistance to detained immigrants. In addition, the firm has provided outstanding pro bono legal services at the ambulatory HIV/AIDS clinic at Beth Israel Medical Center for the last 15 years. A dedicated supporter of the Society since the early 1900s, four Hughes Hubbard partners, beginning with Charles Evans Hughes, have served as Presidents of the Society. Over the years, partners in the firm have served on the Society's Board of Directors.
