Not-for-Profit Board Service for Lawyers Video Video

While some law firms don't permit legal work to be done for any nonprofit on whose board a lawyer from the law firm sits, many do permit it, at least under some circumstances. Various issues can arise when legal-oriented issues are considered by a nonprofit board with one or more attorney members, even if no board member attorney (or the attorney's firm) has agreed to provide legal services. Additional issues can arise when a nonprofit on whose board a lawyer sits asks for legal services from either that lawyer or the lawyer's law firm.

The program's goal is not to answer definitively every question that may arise, but rather to sensitize lawyers sitting on nonprofit boards and law firm pro bono coordinators to issues that may raise concerns - so that they will know enough to consult with nonprofit law and legal ethics experts when appropriate.
