An Update on Fair Housing: Immigrant Tenant Rights

Topics:
  • Immigration

Following an increase in reports that landlords are harassing tenants who are immigrants or illegally discriminating tenants on the basis of national origin or religion, among other protected characteristics, Governor Cuomo announced in June a new statewide campaign to investigate these cases as well as to educate landlords and tenants about their rights and responsibilities. In this informative session, representatives from the New York State Division of Human Rights and New York State Homes and Community Renewal will share information and resources from the statewide initiative on housing rights and protections for tenants who are immigrants.  The session will cover tenant harassment in rent-regulated and non-rent-regulated housing in New York State; housing discrimination and protected classes; the housing protections of the New York State Human Rights Law and the process for filing a complaint with the Division of Human Rights.  The training will be followed by a brief Q&A session.  The presenters from New York State Homes and Community Renewal will be Brooke Davis, Deputy Counsel for Policy and Lindsey Counts, Senior Attorney.  The presenter from the New York State Division of Human Rights will be Commissioner Helen Diane Foster.
