The International Labor Organization estimates that 20.9 million people around the globe are held in all forms of servitude, including forced labor.  For decades, impunity has been the norm.  But the status quo is changing.  Supply chains are under tremendous scrutiny, with legislation mandating greater transparency.  Strategic litigation has emerged as a tool to combat forced labor in the United States and abroad.  And federal prosecutors now have the power to bring extraterritorial cases in U.S. courts.

Over the past five years, pro bono attorneys have played a key role in fighting for justice for victims of forced labor.  The number of civil trafficking cases filed in U.S. federal courts has tripled since 2012.  The trend is likely to continue, with demands for accountability increasing across the globe.
