Pro Bono Partnership, Inc.

The mission of the Pro Bono Partnership, Inc. ( is to provide in-house attorneys with discrete, manageable and non-time sensitive pro bono projects. The Partnership works throughout the suburban NY tri-state area (Connecticut, New Jersey and the NY Lower Hudson Valley). Our clients are nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations that provide a wide range of important services for the poor and disadvantaged, as well as groups working in the areas of health and human services, affordable housing, neighborhood revitalization, the arts and the environment.

In-house and law firm attorneys volunteer through the Partnership to provide a broad range of business legal advice (no litigation) to our nonprofit clients, helping to strengthen these organizations and enhancing their capacity to serve our communities. In contrast to "traditional" pro bono matters which are primarily litigation-based, the Partnership's pro bono projects allow in-house attorneys to utilize their existing business legal skills on projects relating to: Corporate structure and governance; Contracts and leases; Real estate; Intellectual property; Employment law; Environmental law; Tax and tax-exempt status; Merger, dissolution and bankruptcy; Community and economic development; Presentation of legal seminars for nonprofits; Drafting articles and publications in the volunteers' areas of expertise
The Partnership's services are coordinated and supported by a team of twelve staff members, including eight staff attorneys specializing in the law of tax-exempt organizations. Our staff attorneys co-counsel with our volunteers on projects, and we can also pair in-house and law firm attorneys to work together as needed. Additionally, we have a variety of forms and model documents to assist volunteers.

The Partnership and its volunteers have received numerous national and local awards, including the American Corporate Counsel Association Corporate Pro Bono Award for outstanding commitment to the provision of pro bono service, and the American Bar Association/West Group Public Service Award for the most outstanding bar association program in the country providing direct service to the public.

Over 2,000 lawyers have volunteered with the Partnership since our inception in 1997, including lawyers from American Express, Citi, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, General Electric, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, MasterCard, PepsiCo, Pitney Bowes, Prudential, RBS, Thomson Reuters, UBS, Xerox, UTC, Sony, and many other leading corporations.

Our volunteer attorneys are eligible for various professional benefits:

  • NY attorneys can receive CLE credit for work done through the Partnership
  • NJ attorneys may claim exemption from mandatory court-appointed pro bono
  • CT attorneys may qualify for services through the Connecticut Bar Association including free training seminars, recognition on the CBA Honor Roll and vouchers for CLE seminars
