Participants will learn how to develop and execute a strategy for handling domestic violence cases in court, including preparing clients for court, negotiating on behalf of clients, representing clients in court, and helping clients understand what court decisions mean and how to move forward.

This massive open online course (MOOC) is free to anyone who wants to learn more about how to meet the unique challenges posed by pro bono clients. The course will be held online from Monday, April 29th through Friday, May 3rd. The daily schedule is flexible. You can participate any time day or night. CLE Credit will be issued automatically upon completing all content in this program. No partial credit is issued for this program.

What You Will Learn

  • Develop a theory of the case that fits the pattern of evidence
  • Identify remedies that are supported by the law in your jurisdiction and address your client’s needs and life goals
  • Prepare your client to give testimony to support the theory of the case and the requested remedies
  • Prepare your client to feel more comfortable and confident with the courtroom experience
  • Negotiate with your clients’ abusers or their representative’s prior to hearings in order to maximize chances for a successful outcome for their clients.
  • Present your theory of the case and evidence to the court to increase the chances that the judge will grant the desired outcome.
  • Examine your client and other witnesses to elicit the necessary information to support the desired remedies
  • Cross-examine the respondent to support your theory of the case
  • Make sure your client understands the outcome of the hearing and knows what to do going forward.
