Protecting the privacy of child and teen victims of sexual assault, dating and domestic violence, and stalking can be challenging. For many minors, privacy is their priority. Fear that information about the victim, or the abuse itself, may be disclosed to anyone outside your agency can cause a victim to refuse to speak with you or to not seek your services in the first place. While minors do not have the same privacy rights as adults, they do still have rights. In this interactive webinar, we will discuss why privacy is key for many survivors who are minors and how survivors’ privacy needs impact the survivor-provider relationship. We will identify laws that govern minors’ rights to confidentiality and privilege, as well as how mandatory reporting laws can impact these rights. We will also discuss what informed consent is, and how to get it. Throughout this presentation, we will introduce and integrate VRLC’s new Minors’ Privacy Toolkit, resources for practitioners who serve survivors who are minors. This toolkit will help us work through situations advocates are likely to encounter in their work with minors.
