Description:
On October 21, 2016 South Africa’s government filed notice of its intention to quit the International Criminal Court (ICC) (the process will take a year). Burundi and The Gambia, home to the ICC’s Chief Prosecutor, also decided to withdraw from the ICC. Kenya, Uganda and Namibia have made similar threats. This program will discuss the rationale for such withdrawals and objections by the U.N. Secretary-General and Chief Prosecutor of the ICC, among others. This discussion seeks not only to repeat the pros and cons of the withdrawals, but to propose steps that can be taken to avoid impunity of top-level perpetrators of atrocities and war crimes in countries that have withdrawn from the ICC.

Speakers:

  • H.E. Ambassador Jerry Matthews Matjila, Permanent Representative of the Republic of South Africa to the United Nations
  • H.E. Ambassador Mamadou Tangara, Permanent Representative of the Republic of The Gambia to the United Nations
