Examining Conditions of Confinement in New York's Correctional Facilities: A Focus on Prisoners' Rights

Description:
The program will examine conditions of confinement and promote dialogue about the urgent medical care and mental health needs of prisoners in U.S. and New York correctional facilities. Experience at Rikers in NYC and at other correctional facilities will be used as examples of system-wide problems that call for coordinated action and public policy responses to protect prisoners' rights and prevent further abuses. Speakers will include advocates and researchers, as well as those who may be working to effect change within the system.

The first half of the program will highlight advocacy efforts and opportunities and the second half of the program will address ongoing research as well as future systems reforms and policy recommendations.

  • Mary Beth Morrissey, PhD, MPH, JD, Fellow, Global Healthcare Innovation Management Center, Fordham University
  • Jack Beck, Director of the Prison Visiting Project at the Correctional Association of NY (CA), which has statutory authority to inspect prisons in NY State and to report its findings to the legislature and public. Prior to the CA, Jack was a Senior Supervising Attorney at the Prisoners’ Right Project (PRP) of the Legal Aid Society, where he worked for 23 years.
