Legal Issues Cancer Patients Face and How to be an Advocate

Topics:
  • Health Care

The ABA Health Law Section Breast Cancer Advocacy Task Force trains attorneys across the country to advocate for breast cancer and other cancer patients.

This webinar will include a substantive discussion of the issues cancer patients face from a medical and legal perspective. Linda Wilkins, an experienced employee benefits attorney and national board of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, will discuss employee benefit issues such as insurance coverage, insurance mandates, impact on benefits, discrimination, and disability coverage issues.

Register with the ABA.

In addition, Joanna Morales, a national cancer rights attorney and professor, will discuss the impact of the Affordable Care Act on cancer benefits and coverage, and the application and impact of the Family and Medical Leave Act and Americans with Disabilities Act as well as other pertinent labor and employment laws impacting the continued employment and treatment leave of cancer patients. The speakers will also discuss end-of-life decision making as it impacts cancer patients.

In addition, the speakers will provide a brief overview of other legal issues facing cancer patients such as family law matters and tenant rights. Lastly, the webinar will describe various options for attorneys to become legal advocates for cancer patients including how to get involved, how to get additional training, and the various national and local panels available to provide pro bono services through.

Most of the women seeking legal assistance will have issues related to coverage for treatment, employment problems, or debt relief and this webinar will provide overviews on these and other legal issues.

This program will serve as a kick-off for a member benefit series that will provide additional in depth training on the topics covered in this webinar.

This program is offered as a live, online class. Registrants may only participate through the live webinar. An archived recording will not be available. To participate your computer will need a current Internet browser, a current version of Adobe Flash and a high-speed Internet connection.
