Program Description
While the jail population is declining in New York City, the number of individuals with mental illness in NYC
jails has increased from 25% in 2005 to 33% in 2011. Similarly, the number of people with mental illness in
New York State prisons is on the rise.
This legal education program will cover critical areas of legal practice related to working with individuals with
mental illness involved in the criminal justice system. Program sessions will include salient information, case
studies, tools and resources to help legal professionals develop core competencies that can enhance public
safety and improve outcomes for people with mental illness.
