Topics:
  • Civil Rights

Why you should attend

Section 1983 authorizes private parties to enforce their federal constitutional rights against state and local officials and municipalities. Section 1983 litigation is typically multi-faceted, often complex, and may raise a wide range of issues. The issues may include questions of constitutional and federal statutory interpretation, various immunities and other defenses, and the right to recover statutory attorney's fees.

The law of Section 1983 is voluminous and develops on an ongoing basis in the United States Supreme Court and in the lower courts. This past Term the Supreme Court rendered an unusual number of significant decisions important for Section 1983 litigators.

At PLI's 29th Annual Section 1983 Civil Rights Litigation program, a highly experienced and accomplished faculty of federal court judges, legal scholars, practitioners, and police practice experts will analyze recent trends and decisions as well as litigation strategies. The program's goal is to present both the plaintiffs' and defense perspectives.
