The Civil Rights Division released today a report describing its accomplishments from 2009 to 2013 in enforcing Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Title VI is a landmark civil rights statute that prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color and national origin in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. In his message to Congress proposing the enactment of this provision, President John F. Kennedy explained: “Simple justice requires that public funds, to which all taxpayers of all races contribute, not be spent in any fashion which encourages, entrenches, or results in racial discrimination.”
