Translators often face the task of translating words, terms or expressions that are culturally challenging and do not appear to exist in the target language (TL) or target culture (TC). This seminar will examine the cultural categories that pose translation problems and the translation techniques that provide the most acceptable solutions. More specifically, the seminar:

Will explore the five areas of cultural categories as Material Culture, Social Culture, Organisations etc.
Will teach the most common techniques and strategies applied in the cultural translation context (as adaptation, borrowing, description, calque, compensation, omission, reduction etc)
Will discuss the role of the Target Reader
Will review some specific examples of cultural terms and their translation (Christmas pudding, Christmas crackers, la piƱata etc)
